My name is Edie (pronounced EE-DEE), and I am a fifteen year old in my freshman year at University of Toronto Schools.
I grew up in Vancouver BC, near the ocean. I left Vancouver when I was eight, moving to the center of Beijing, China. Two years ago, I came back to Canada, except this time I moved to Toronto, home of the Raptors. Due to my multicultural and multilingual upbringing, I like to think of myself as a global citizen that cares about many different issues. For example, I am actively involved as the president of public relations for Wild Lives Our Lives, a not for profit organization dedicated to saving wildlife in China. I have also participated in multiple volunteering programs where I helped Chinese speaking seniors lead an easier life, technology wise, and social wise.
From my experiences transitioning between different environments, my empathy has grown significantly, because I have experienced first hand the difficulty of trying to fit in and language barriers. This resulted in a hard hit on my self esteem – I couldn’t understand anyone else or even the questions on worksheets, and I was consistently the odd one out. Having experienced extremely low self esteem, it was time to do something about it. I have spoken at Youth Assisting Youth events, as well as promoted self love and the importance of confidence across my social media, and in media interviews. I also carry the message of self-love through into my pageant coaching business, ensuring that every girl I coach understands her inherent worth as a kind human being.
I practice and promote self-love in my hobbies as well: modelling, tennis, and volleyball. Modelling has also helped me develop a thick skin, and become more resilient. In the modelling industry, rejection is dished out routinely, which also contributed to the positive growth and reaffirming of my confidence, because once I was able to know that I was enough, I became sure in my own abilities, and understood my self worth. It also led to the consolidation of my belief that beauty is what is on the inside, because that is the only piece of you that is completely you. The beauty of your personality is the only beauty that matters. I was on my school’s tennis and volleyball team last year, and enjoyed every moment with my friends, supporting each other through the ups and downs of tournaments. Being active in group sports, I have developed my ability to communicate with others in times of pressure, reassuring, encouraging, and inspiring those around me.
