Finalist Miss Teen Canada 2021
Katherine K
Hello,
My name is Katherine, from Grandview Manitoba. I am a grade 11 student at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. Last year I completed my lifeguard and lifesaving training and taught swimming lessons. It was a big accomplishment and I was very proud of myself. Teaching swimming lessons is natural to me and very rewarding. I was employed part time at our local grocery store and enjoyed seeing all of the familiar friendly faces. I have completed my food safe course and work part time with a catering business. I am not afraid of working hard. The oldest of four children, I am a little mom to my siblings. My youngest sister was born when I was 12, so am able to cherish those memories of her when she was born. One new hobby of mine is watching the news with my great grandma and having discussions about the daily events. I am a volunteer at the Parkland Humane Society, and have enjoyed volunteering as an assistant coach for young girls’ volleyball and basketball. I am a long-time member of student council and student advisory committee. I am constantly giving my all to my school. In 2019, I won the class proficiency award because of my grades, student council and athletic achievements. I dream of becoming a pediatrician as I have always loved helping others, especially children. My passions include snowboarding, Ukrainian dance, volleyball and track and field. Ukrainian dance is so beautiful and I have met many new friends over the years. I have danced with the Veselka Dance Ensemble and the Zirka Dance Ensemble at a Senior level. In 2019, I performed at The National Ukrainian Festival held in Dauphin, Manitoba. It is my favorite event of the year but sadly was postponed due to Covid 19 in 2020. Many volleyball camps and a year of club training improved my skills which enabled me to attend volleyball provincials and also track and field provincials. During the winter my family and I go ice fishing and sledding as often as we can. It is great to be outdoors and spend time with my family. I love to run and workout and believe that movement and dance help with stress management. I have the ambition and confidence to be a good role model for young girls everywhere. My platform is to get involved and get active in any way I can. I have learned that just a smile and a hello can change someone’s day and be a light for others while making myself content as well. Covid 19 has affected people of all ages and leaves many dealing with mental health issues. I feel that many teens and pre-teens are dealing with mental health issues that sometimes get overlooked by their parents and guardians. I have always been the type of person to be there when someone needs to talk and try to help in any way I can. I believe mental health is just as important as physical health. I have attended many mental health seminars and have heard many people speak of their journey of mental illness. If I am chosen as Miss Teen Canada 2021, it would allow me to reach out to larger groups to shed more light on mental health issues.
