Finalist Miss Teen Canada 2023
Mya B
Hello,
Hello, my name is Mya, I am an eighteen year old, first year university student from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. I am currently studying psychology at St. Francis Xavier University, with plans to obtain my masters in psychology, and go on to law school. I have a passion for cheerleading, and last year had the privilege of competing and winning a national title during my senior season with my high school team. I’ve since been cheering at the university level, and have made the best of friends.
As well, I’ve had a passion for writing and poetry since I was a child. Seven years ago, I got the chance to publish my first book through winning a national writing contest, and just recently published my second book, my first poetry collection. I am thankful for all the opportunities I have had to grow and pursue my passions, and I’m so excited to uplift the other young women I will be competing alongside throughout this journey .
As a child, I was diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune condition, which presented me with both challenges and opportunities as I grew up. When competing for Miss Teen Canada this year, I hope to become a role model for other young girls across the country, and set an example for other chronically ill youth. My goal is to show that we too can achieve, we can celebrate successes, we can set goals and reach them, and we have so much to contribute despite our illness.
If I were to win the Miss Teen Canada competition, I would use my platform to raise awareness of youth experiences with chronic illness, and create an online community where the youth of Canada can be unapologetically themselves, and expressive of issues that are of importance to them. Further, I would use my platform to give back to Brigadoon summer camps for kids with terminal and chronic illnesses, where I was once a camper myself. I feel so incredibly lucky to have gained my best friends, an incredible support system, and further education regarding my chronic autoimmune condition, and would love to give back to a community that supported me so much growing up. Most of all, I look forward to creating
long-lasting bonds with the other contestants, and seeing them grow and thrive through this experience as well.
