Finalist Miss Teen Canada 2020
Shayla H
Hello,
Hello, my name is Shayla, and I am from Cambridge Ontario, part of the tri-cities of Waterloo Region which is home to Canada’s largest Bavarian festival – Oktoberfest. I am a member of a German folk dancing group that has performed across Ontario, the United States, and this summer I look forward to dancing in Europe as well.
At my high school, I am a part of my school’s Link Crew which helps grade 9 students with transitioning into high school. I just finished playing 4 years of competitive volleyball. I was honoured to be selected in 2017 to the 16U Team Ontario volleyball team where I competed at the North American Indigenous Games. I am looking forward to trying out for the ladies’ team again in 2020. Last summer, I was selected to take part in a Canadian Forces summer program called Raven where at the end of 6 weeks, I was able to obtain my Basic Military Training Qualifications. This gave me a deeper appreciation and admiration for those that serve our country.
My aspiration is to one day be a teacher. I would like to study Environmental Science as my undergraduate degree. This would allow me to blend my interest in the environment as well as science with my desire to be a motivating influence on upcoming generations.
I have a strong belief in giving back through volunteering and it is with that interest that among other areas of volunteering I hold the position of National Youth Director with the Canadian Schwaben Clubs where I help to co-ordinate youth activities that promote traditional cultural understanding. I also sit on the First Peoples Youth Council for the Region of Waterloo. This allows me to further learn about my blended cultural background while supporting local Indigenous initiatives.
With my leadership skills and my ability to accept and encourage all people within my school, on my sports teams, and during all the extra curricular activities I take part in, this has lead me to a point in my life where I feel I can inspire others, especially youth, to embrace a positive outlook on life and focus good energy on reaching all goals they set for themselves.

If you’d Elected: what you would realize
Why vote for me!
My goal if I were to be the next Miss Teen Canada would be to become an inspiration to all people especially youth. I would like to continue to focus my energy on volunteering with charities and organizations that are close to my heart. Both the environment and youth issues are my passion. I would like to travel across Canada to promote the title of Miss Teen Canada and share my enthusiasm of good will, helping as many people as possible along the way.
I have a zest for life, a desire for positive change, and lead by example. I live by setting goals and work hard to accomplish them. For example, I attained my Basic Military Training within the Royal Canadian Navy; I have led various clubs and participated on sports teams at my school; I joined the school leadership team too; I have performed in school theatre productions and helped to choreograph and perform the live on-board train performance of the Polar Express in St. Jacobs, Ontario. Overall, I believe I am a well-rounded individual that can represent Canada favourably.
